The most effective way people can assist relief efforts is by making cash contributions to humanitarian organizations that are conducting relief operations, such as the ones on our List of Relief Organizations.
USAID encourages cash donations because they: allow aid professionals to procure the exact items needed (often in the affected region); reduce the burden on scarce resources (such as transportation routes, staff time, warehouse space, etc); can be transferred very quickly and without transportation costs; support the economy of the disaster-stricken region; ensure culturally, dietary, and environmentally appropriate assistance. Below is my own news, and then
some info re: donations for RED CROSS and the RELIEF ORGS working
in the south, plus a website where you can get the latest info.
WE at North by North-East in NKP & Laos are all OK, but not so for our
partners and friends down south.
Right now not only are we in the peak of high season, so we have rather
a lot of work anyway, but the South was devastated by this tidal wave.
It is in shambles, and many many people are dead. My #1 driver (Note)
in Phuket has vanished, as has our best kayak guide (who works for
my partner there). We hope they are OK, and continue to search and try
to contact them.
One old guy of ours (72yrs client) was swept of Golden Buddha Beach, and
he took 4 hours to swim back. Lucky for him he was so strong at that
age. 2 Jounros from the Wall Street Journal happened to be hiking on
the highest point of that island when it hit, and described having to
hang onto trees to stay put. Nobody else was left on that resort
as far as I can find now.
Fortunately my clients there that day have mostly been OK. Some
small injuries. My friend and former employee Nathan M was on a boat
with his Mom and DAd at the time, about to dock in Phi Phi some 100
meters from shore. Ironically those on boats in the ocean were saved,
as they could watch the people on shore scrambling for higher ground.
Nate described water covering the second story rooms within 30
seconds.
Many clients of my colleagues who specialize in Beach holidays have
been washed off of beaches and islands by the dozen. I want to help
relatives from UK try to track down a honeymoon couple at Golden
Buddha Beach resort (where the old chap save himself), and while
they are coming here tonight to search themselves, I think it is a
futile excersise. But what can I tell those searching? That they should
not come? It is terribly heart-wrenching.
The only bright spot is that folks (whose names you wont know but I
want to mention) like Dave Williams from PAddle Asia, Rewat Chindaphol
and his staff, Nathan, and other folks with whom I work are all
working hard to assist the relief teams there.
We at North by North-East are swamped in changes of plans for clients
going to South. Many have cancelled, and many have changed their
plans. But EVERY HOTEL in Thailand is chokker-block full now. So it is
quite chaotic now.
Below please find info on how you can learn more about helping in this
situation.
Salaams,
Nick

* * * THAI NEWS & INFORMATION IN ENGLISH * * *
From Internet Thailand:
Due to the earthquake and tidal waves hit the western coastlines in the
south of Thailand, INET has created English information about the on-going
relief efforts in THAILAND in the website
http://www.inet.co.th/tsunami
The website provides, for example, translation from many relief Thai
information, linkage and/or user interface to these information - on a
best effort only. Also, this page is updated frequently
We hope this web is helpful for foreigners on the Internet and expatriates
in Thailand, having someone visiting the areas during the disaster, to get
the information about their friends or relatives.
