When the Russians departed Afghanistan, the Mustafa Hotel in Kabul was seriously damaged during the civil war that followed. After the September 11 attack in the U.S., Afghan-American Wais Faizi reconstructed and refurbished the hotel including the rooftop patio. The rooftop became the home of Jack’s Tora BoraCafé with the notorious Jonathan “Jack” Keith Idema as its proprietor. At the time, Jack’s Tora Bora Café was a well-known watering hole in Kabul. It was patronized by a variety of foreign national military, civilian, and freelance operatives, journalists, and contractors, including many China Post 1 members, until it was closed after the passing of Faizi and Idema. The present successor to Jack’s Tora Bora Café is the Tora Bora Café located in the International Security Assistance Forces (ISAF) Headquarters in Kabul. This plaque is 7.5 inches high by 9.5 inches wide. It will certainly be a collector’s item as only a limited number of them will be cast and there will be other “Watering Hole and Safehouse” plaques coming in the set.
